“We will be remembered more for…our kindness than for…our accomplishments, our generosity than our riches, our service than our successes.”

-Excerpt from Excellence is Never An Accident – Derric Johnson-

December 1, 2012

Here’s a little background on Michael A. Giello Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Prior to donating money to Bonner’s Football team “The Giello Family” donated a $2,000 a year scholarship to a graduate of St. Charles Borromeo School in Drexel Hill, PA where my brothers Michael, Anthony, my son Matthew and I all attended grade school.

Since St. Charles has closed, we choose Bonner’s Football Team to be the beneficiary of our efforts to help with the program. Mostly to help kids who can’t afford the tuition go to a great Catholic institution and to be able to play football.

My son Matthew played with Greg Bernhardt on the 1994 Catholic Championship Team and since Greg is one of the reasons Bonner’s Football Program is on the upswing, we are hoping this scholarship will help the school remain competitive in the Catholic League.

Also, Greg is the type of person I’d want my own kids to follow. I’m sure many of you feel the same about Bonner’s head coach. The fact that Greg is also a graduate of St. Charles makes this feel like it is the right thing to do for Bonner- Prendie.

My brother Michael A. Giello graduated from Bonner in 1965. He would have been drafted into the Army had he and his friends not all joined the Navy together.

After I got drafted and was sent to Viet Nam my parents were frantic. At that time they would not send two family members to Viet Nam at the same time. However, since I got drafted and my brother joined the Navy for 4 years, after I got back from Viet Nam (one year tour) my brother would still have had over a year left in the service.

Since my parents were so worried about me being in Viet Nam, my brother Mike volunteered to go to Guam. Right after I got out of the Army on Oct 24, 1969, my brother Michael was killed in a car accident and died November 23, 1969 at the age of 23.

Many of you have children and you can imagine how my parents felt at that time in their lives. This benefit is to help keep my Michael’s memory alive and to help the school that helped my brothers, my son and myself become men.

On behalf of the Michael A. Giello Scholarship Fund, I would like to thank you for your generous donation. Whether it was money or a gift certificate your contribution made it possible to donate $2,000.00 to the Monsignor Bonner Football program.

The scholarship is given to needy family whose child otherwise would not be able to afford to go to Bonner. However, the player must continue to have at least a B average to retain our support.

Thank you again for your generous support for the Monsignor Bonner Football Program.
